Romantic Rivalry, Gadget Filled House in Keaton’s “The Scarecrow”

Keaton and fellow farmhand Joe Roberts (a boyhood friend from Michigan) are rivals for the farmer’s daughter, so Buster comes up with a scarecrow disguise to win her in 1920’s “The Scarecrow.”
This is a typical cast for Buster’s short work, with Sybil Seely (Convict 13, One Week) as the farmer’s daughter and his own father, Joe Keaton, portraying the farmer. The dog in the cast here is Fatty Arbuckle's Straffordshire Bull Terrier, Luke.
In the early 1900’s performers began to spend summers in the Bluffton area. Buster’s father, Joe, helped found the Actor’s Colony club there and by 1911, over 200 performers resided in the colony. By the early 1920’s, the California film industry lured many vaudevillian performers to Hollywood, including Buster and his family.
