Hackley Public Library makes October exciting, as people of all ages use classes, clubs and activities here. Fall into fun at the new library!

Legal Rehab plays acoustic folk/rock October 9, the Hackley Girls Coding Club meets on Mondays, and local authors and Barnes & Noble help raise funds for the library October 6.

If you like your October scary, take in a family friendly movie October 13, learn about West Michigan Paranormal Hot Spots October 23, take your toddler to Halloween Story Time October 25, and play tag with zombies October 30. Details below!


The Community Honors Martha Ferriby October 12

Friday, October 12, 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., the community will honor Martha Ferriby at a Retirement Reception. Celebrate Marty's over 44 years of leadership and 24 years as Hackley Public Library director at this public retirement reception.

Marty was the 2011 winner of the American Library Association's I Love My Librarian Award. Throughout her tenure, she has served Muskegon's diverse groups of library users and helped keep the 128 year old building an important part of the community.

Monday, October 1, 6:00 p.m., Leaf Candle Holders. Repurpose a standard canning jar into a cute fall decoration. Join Nancy Hartman as she leads this project. Registration required as space is limited.

Earn virtual badges as you complete each activity and master new skills. No registration is required, and we’ll have special treats at the first meeting! Are you already an experienced coder? We’ll work on more advanced projects with professional coders. This club works best for grades six through 10.

Saturday, October 6, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., Trail of Michigan Authors Book Fair. Forty plus local authors will be present at Barnes & Noble to meet, discuss and sign books. The Friends of Hackley Library receive a percentage of all B&N sales (except gift cards) to continue programs at HPL.

Saturday, October 6, 2:00 p.m., Legos! Dump our Lego bins and construct a whole new world! All Lego creations go proudly on display in the Youth Services department.

Monday, October 15, 6:00 p.m., Open Mic Night with Clayton Hardiman. Take your creativity to the mic! Whether you want to read poetry, sing, play music or perform comedy, we want to hear you. Tuesday, October 16, noon to 5:30 p.m., Tech Tuesday. Reserve your 30 minute appointment to have your computer/tech questions answered by our in-house IT people. We will answer questions on using computers and apps-anything from how to navigate Windows to how to upload pictures to Facebook. Tuesday, October 30, 8:00 p.m., Humans vs. Zombies. Brains! The Zombie Apocalypse-style game of tag will be at the Hackley Public Library! Human players must defend themselves against the infestation of zombies with dart blasters and socks. 16 years and up. Limited to 50 players. Founded in 1890, the Hackley Public Library is located at 316 W. Webster Ave, in downtown Muskegon. The library is open noon to 8:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Hackley Public Library will be closed on December 23, 24 and 25 plus December 31, 31 and January 1. We’ll be open usual hours December 26, 27, 28, and 29, and starting again on January 2.
