Does CBD Work for Hair Loss and Thinning Hair?

BY ROD GLUPKER, OWNER, CBD STORE OF MICHIGAN

For those worried about hair loss and thinning, CBD is gaining popularity as a way to treat it. While other areas of health still need to be explored in relation to using CBD, there has been a lot of research into how it works for hair thinning.

Here are some things to know about CBD and its applications in the hair care world.

What is CBD? CBD, or cannabidiol, is a natural compound found in hemp. It belongs to a group of substances known as cannabinoids, just like THC. It’s important to understand the difference between CBD and other products of cannabis. CBD, or cannabidiol, is a chemical found in hemp. It does not contain high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana that produces a high.

Unlike marijuana, you won’t get high off of CBD, but there have been studies that suggest a multitude of health benefits from using it. It is a known antioxidant and neuroprotectant, and is commonly used for stress and anxiety relief, pain and inflammation reduction, and treating sleep deprivation.

CBD is federally legal, but it is not regulated by the FDA as it is sold as a supplement.

Does CBD Help with Hair Loss? While there aren’t too many studies done on the topic of hair growth yet, there have been some recent studies that show CBD oil helps regrow hair. It’s important to understand, however, that it is not an overnight fix – in fact, nothing is when it comes to treating hair loss or thinning.

A 2021 study showed that people who applied three to four milligrams of CBD oil to their hair and scalp for six months regularly saw successful regrowth. Those who stuck to this regime for the entirety of the six months saw increased hair growth by 93.5 percent.

Factors that cause Hair Loss to Consider before Relying on CBD. Just like CBD is not an overnight fix for hair thinning or hair loss, it’s also not one size fits all. Recent studies mentioned above also showed that CBD oil for the treatment of hair regrowth was not as effective in women as it was in men.

It’s also important to fully understand the root cause of your hair loss before turning to CBD oil as a way to treat it. Results of the method may vary depending on the person, cause of hair loss, age, gender, and other variables.

Causes of Hair Loss. There are many different causes of hair loss, and they can differ strongly between different people. Hair loss and hair thinning can be because of genetics, age, lifestyle, or underlying diseases like alopecia. Women often begin to lose hair or experience thinning when they are pregnant or after giving birth due to strong hormonal changes in the body.

Hair loss can also happen because of certain medications. Chemotherapy for cancer treatment is another factor that can cause extreme hair loss. Unfortunately, there aren’t studies on whether or not CBD oil would help to regrow hair in cases like these.

How to use CBD Oil for Hair Loss and Thinning. In that 2021 study, participants applied CBD oil directly to their scalp - this is the only real study that has shown that method of using CBD oil for hair regrowth to be effective. Hair regrowth treatment through CBD has only been tested in the application of CBD oil, so other types of CBD, like gummies, might not be at all effective.

Some suggest that you can add the oil to your current hair care routines, such as mixing it into your shampoos and conditioners. You can also try our CBD Shampoo that has CBD already included in the ingredients.

What Kinds Of CBD Oil Should You Use? If you’ve decided you’re going to give CBD a whirl to combat your hair thinning or hair loss, its important to understand what makes a quality oil.

When hunting for the right brand or bottle of CBD oil, you should be looking for a product that is full-spectrum – meaning it contains all cannabinoids naturally found in the cannabis plant, including low levels of THC – and third-party tests and made from hemp grown in the U.S.

Like any supplement or treatment, it’s important to consult with experts in the field before you really rely on one treatment path, like CBD oil.
