Activities for Kids, Teens and Adults are at Hackley Public Library

People of all ages are using Hackley Public Library's classes, clubs and activities to improve their lives, learn valuable life skills, and socialize. Newly remodeled, with an improved air conditioning system, HPL is the place to cool down and smarten up in August!

The Summer Reading Program is still in full swing! All ages of readers still have time to be a part of the fun. Read what you want and as often as you want. The more you read, the better your chances of winning a prize! More at the Hackley Public Library website here.

Wednesday, August 1, 1:00 p.m. Tips and Tricks for Phones and Tablets. Having trouble with your tablet? Flustered by your phone? Bring it to HPL on Wednesdays at 1:00 to get tech help. A class for adults. Walk ins welcome.

Wednesday, August 1, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Book Buzz. This isn’t your standard Book Club for adults! Book Buzz is all about talking to other book lovers about your recently read and/or favorite books. This laid back atmosphere allows for great chatter and everyone is welcome. Held the first Wednesday of the month. Coffee is included.

Thursday, August 2, 10:00 to noon, Kids' Flea Market. An Annual Kids’ Flea Market on the Lawn of the Hackley Administration Building. Come Sell-a-brate the beginning of August! Here’s your chance to turn your old toys, books, and games into fun and a little bit of spending money. Not sure what to sell? No worries! We suggest old books, collectibles, stuffed animals, puzzles, and hand-made crafts. We also wouldn’t say no to baked goods or the traditional lemonade stand. Make sure you don’t charge more than 50 cents per item!

Children run their own booths (adult help is recommended) and keep what they earn. The event will move to Friday, August 3 in the event of rain.

Interested sellers should bring their own tables, chairs, or beach blankets to sell from as well as money to make change. Registration is required. Call (231) 722-8014 to sign up.  

Saturday, August 4, 10:30 a.m. to noon, Adult Computer Class: Pinterest. De'ondra Pentecost teaches computer classes on Saturdays. Registration is required. To register, call HPL at (231) 722-8000 or visit our online calendar and look for the class you are interested in. Registration opens one month before the class. Classes are brought to you through the generosity of the Friends of Hackley Public Library and the House Family Foundation.

Saturday, August 11, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., Legos. Kids! Spark up your creativity and get busy building! We’ll put all our Legos out for a relaxed afternoon of creating and inventing.

Saturday, August 11, 3:00 to 4:30 p.m., Self Defense Class (Adults and teens). Using his 30 plus years of various martial arts experience Scot Demarest, Chief instructor at Lakeshore Martial Arts, put together a course in self-defense that anyone will be able to use. After teaching you an eight-move-combination, Scot will demonstrate multiple different scenarios you can use this combination in order to defend yourself. Make sure to wear gym-type attire. Registration required as space is limited.

Tuesday, August 14, 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., UFOs. Are you interested in UFOs and stories of personal encounters? Dr. Ron Pleune has been interested in extraterrestrials ever since he began researching the Billy Meier Story in 2015. His presentation will discuss the story of Billy Meier’s contact with extraterrestrials, as well as his personal experiences in signaling UFOs.

Wednesday, August 15, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Left to Write Creative Writing Group. Adults and teens, do you enjoy creative writing? Are you inspired by innovative thoughts and ideas? Become a part of Left to Write, HPL's own Creative Writing Group! Here you can share your own stories, participate in exercises, and meet other creative writers. This group will provide a low key atmosphere for writers of all experiences. Everyone is welcome, so feel free to tell your friends! Remember to bring paper and your favorite pen.

Saturday, August 18, 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., Pirate Tales For families! Hear the rollicking pirates stories (both male and female) from around the world. Your very genial host, Captain Taffy, will tell exciting tales of pirates from many exciting locations including: England, Germany, Ireland, Morocco, The Caribbean and more!

Tuesday, August 21, noon to 7:00 p.m., Tech Tuesdays. Reserve your 30 minute appointment to have your computer/tech questions answered by our in-house IT people. We will answer questions on using computers and apps-anything from how to navigate Windows to how to upload pictures to Facebook. Call (231) 722-8012 at least 24 hours in advance to reserve your spot. By appointment only, walk-in spots will not be available.

Founded in 1890, the Hackley Public Library is located at 316 W. Webster Ave, in downtown Muskegon. The library is open noon to 8:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Hackley Public Library will be closed on December 23, 24 and 25 plus December 31, 31 and January 1. We’ll be open usual hours December 26, 27, 28, and 29, and starting again on January 2.
