Hackley Public Library and the Muskegon Lighthouse are teaming up to host a special Storytime at the Lighthouse on Monday afternoons, July 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29 at 3:00 p.m. We’ll enjoy listening to stories outside and watching ships sail through the channel. Any children that participate can stay to climb the lighthouse tower for free with the admission of an adult. Visitors must be three feet tall to climb and sturdy shoes are recommended.

Hackley Crafts is on Monday, July 1 starting at 6:00 p.m. This month we will be repurposing old buttons to make a beautiful moon collage. Registration is required to attend. Call HPL at (231) 722-8011 or visit the online calendar to register.

Monday, July 8 at 5:30 p.m., engineer your own cardboard rocket ship and explore new galaxies. Visit new planets and greet new species of aliens, all created from your own imagination. The library will provide all building supplies.

Take a journey this summer that is out of this world, with the Summer of Sci-Fi Book Club. Discuss a different book each month and explore a “Universe of Stories.” Discussions lead by HPL librarian, Analiese Mattson. Located on the main floor Julia Hackley Room. Limited copies of the book will be available behind the reference desk for participants. July 8 at 6:00 p.m., The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin.

Do you enjoy creative writing? Are you inspired by innovative thoughts and ideas? Become a part of Left to Write, HPL's own Creative Writing Group! Join us July 10 and 24 at 3:30 p.m. to participate in exercises, share your own stories and meet other creative writers. This group will provide a low key atmosphere for writers of all experiences. Everyone is welcome, so feel free to tell your friends! Remember to bring paper and your favorite pen.

Thursday, July 11, 18 and 25, join us for Summer Storytime for small children ages birth to five years, which include songs, movement activities, and a craft! Stories start at 10:30 a.m.

Saturday, July 13 at 2:00 p.m., learn how you can take better photos with your smartphone. Pro photographer, Jeff Smith, will show you strategies for improving your photos as well as how to make simple edits using the SnapSeed app. There will be time to practice and ask questions. Mary’s Country Critters petting zoo is coming to the library on Tuesday, July 16 at 3:00 p.m.! Pet a pig, cluck at a chicken, and greet a goat. We’ll meet these animals and lots more as we learn about the important role farms and farm animals have here in Michigan

Dust off your helmet and get ready to travel the universe with Zita the Spacegirl by Ben Hatke on Tuesday, July 23 at 1:00 p.m. Zita is an ordinary girl until one day her best friend is abducted. When she tries to save him, Zita finds herself in a strange world on a strange planet. This book club is limited to 10 participants ages 10 to 13. Register at the Youth Services Desk and pick up a copy of the book. Snacks will be provided!

Learn How to Draw Your Dragon. On Wednesday, July 24 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Don’t worry! These dragons won’t bite. Illustrator Corinne Roberts will give us all the best tips and tricks on how to draw our own dragons. This class works best for ages five and up; we strongly encourage adults to accompany younger children.

Players will run, dodge, and dive as they try to out-wit and out-blast the competition during NERF Mobile Games on Thursday, July 25 at 1:00 p.m. From "Capture the Flag" to "Eliminator" to "Zombies vs Humans," players will put their physical and mental skills to the test.

Glow Zumba turns fitness into a party with glow sticks. Join us on Monday, July 29 at 3:00 p.m. for an aerobic dance workout with Latin and international flavored music, led by Paula Sieffert from Lakeshore Fitness Center.

Local Muskegon performers, Ultimate Taste Band, will play live at the Library on Tuesday, July 30 at 6:00 p.m. UTB strives to continue the Motown legacy in Michigan. Encompassing a variety of music from the '70s and '80s, Funk, Classic Rock, pop, and R&B, this band will get you moving and wanting more!
