From Glare to Glow: Controlling Bright Sun

BY CAROL BEATTY, DECORATOR AND WINDOW TREATMENT SPECIALIST, QUIGLEY DRAPERIES

I hear the comments below so often I thought I’d string them together into a story for you to enjoy!

A beautiful day. The sun is finally out. We’re feeling like a cat basking in the soft warmth of the UV rays gently entering the sliding glass doors. Summer is here and all is well. But —

Flash forward to July. The western sun is out. It is 6:00 p.m. The same room is hot. The air conditioner is working really hard to keep up. We have to wear sunglasses in the house to eat at the dinner table. It is too glaring!

What to do? I like the open window look. We put high E glass in the windows, but it still is uncomfortable with the bright sun. My beautiful wood floors are starting to dry out and fade.

A friend said to check out Quigley Draperies. I said, “No draperies.” I don’t want to cover up the great view. She told me to stop in the showroom to see the other choices.

I did and couldn’t believe all of the cool shades available! Sue waited on me, a real person with real expertise. Amazing.

We tried the different shades and “shadings” on the front window displays and in the store. Most of them just disappeared when not in use.

I liked the Silhouette with the sheer fabric on front and back. It let the light in and also softened the UV rays, sending them farther back in the room. Instantly, the afternoon sun was cooler once the shading was down and tipped open.

I also liked the like the sand color and the clear view texture. Yes, Sue said they have colors to work with my rooms.

I was starting to get excited about the choices! They could be cord operated, or done with a Power View. Wait until I tell my husband he can control the tall windows with power -- from his tablet, on his phone, or with his voice!

Fast forward to August. The shadings are installed — not by my husband, but by Greg and Alex from Quigley’s. They were so nice and detail oriented. They took his time and did the job right. And, they taught me how to use my new Pebble remote.

Now I can bask in the beautiful glow of light instead of wearing sunglasses in the house. The air conditioning is much quieter as it’s not overworking because of the new shadings. And my husband can show off the new power toy!

Now, what room to do next…?

I hear all the time from customers how easy it is to go from glare to glow, when they have Quigley’s do all of the work, from designing for the space and specifying what will work best, to measuring and professionally installing. Come talk to us and see our displays at 860 W. Broadway in downtown Roosevelt Park.
