A Universe of Stories and Activities are at Hackley Public Library in June

Explore a Universe of Stories this summer with Hackley Public Library’s annual summer reading program.

Read through four levels of space to earn different prizes. The more you read, the more prizes you earn! Sign up at the library beginning June 17. Adults, teens, and children welcome.

Sharpen your pickaxe and see what you can build and discover in our Minecraft world on Saturday, June 1 starting at 2:00 p.m.!  Space is limited to the first 20 registrants. Register online or by phone (231) 722-8014.

On Monday, June 3 starting at 6:00 p.m. design a necklace featuring your astrological sign. Registration is required. Call HPL at (231) 722-8011 or visit the online calendar to register. Registration opens one month before the class date.

Open Mic Night at the Library is on Tuesday, June 4 starting at 6:00 p.m. It’s your night to be a star! All types of performances are welcome: poetry reading, music, comedy. If you are interested in showcasing your art, please register at hackleylibrary.org or call the reference desk. Walk-ins are welcome. Not interested in the spotlight? Come just to listen.  

Join us for story time for small children ages birth to five years, which include songs, movement activities, and a craft! June dates include the 6, 13, 20, 27 and starts at 10:30 a.m.

Take a journey this summer that is out of this world, with the Summer of Sci-Fi Book Club. Discuss a different book each month and explore a “Universe of Stories.” Discussions lead by HPL librarian, Analiese Mattson. Located on the main floor Julia Hackley Room. Limited copies of the book will be available behind the reference desk for participants. June 10 is 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke.

Learn to enjoy the night sky with little or no equipment. On Tuesday, June 11 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. learn about the starry sky. Michael Galvin, of the Muskegon Astronomical Society, will give a presentation on how to enjoy the night sky. Find out how to use a star chart, learn to spot satellites, and hear about interesting things to look at this month.

Do you enjoy creative writing? Are you inspired by innovative thoughts and ideas? Become a part of Left to Write, HPL's own Creative Writing Group! Join us on June 12 and 18 to participate in exercises, share your own stories and meet other creative writers. This group will provide a low key atmosphere for writers of all experiences. Everyone is welcome, so feel free to tell your friends! Remember to bring paper and your favorite pen.

We’re hosting a special garden-themed story time for two through five year olds with lots of hands-on activities to learn more about what grows in our soil on Thursday, June 13 starting at 10:30 a.m.  This event is a partnership with MSU Extension.

On June 17, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Apollo mission to land on the Moon on July 20, 1969! Investigate how gravity keeps the Moon in orbit around the Earth and what it takes to escape Earth’s gravity to get to the Moon. Experience the creation of Moon craters and the challenges involved in landing safely on the varied surface of the Moon. Learn about current and future missions to other moons and planets in our solar system. Up, up and away!

Sit back and enjoy listening to author Pamela Cameron read her picture book Sport: Ship Dog of the Great Lakes on Tuesday, June 18 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Based on true events, the book follows the story of Sport, a puppy rescued by the crew of the Hyacinth. He became an instant crew member and takes readers on a journey through America’s inland seas. Copies of the book will be available for $15 and a book signing will be available after the program. All ages are welcome!

Do you enjoy music that reminds you of “riding through the desert with the top down?”  This award-winning duo, Whiskey Charmers are back at Hackley Public Library on Saturday, June 22 at 2 PM with their unique style of alt-country music.

“Nitwit! Oddment! Blubber! Tweak!” Step into the Astronomy Tower of Hogwarts and see if you and your group can outwit and out-think the shifting castle. You and your Housemates have 30 minutes to solve the puzzles, ciphers, and clues.  If you can’t figure out the portrait’s password before time is up, a Prefect patrol might catch you out of your House after curfew!

This escape room is designed for groups of all ages.  However, at least one adult must be present in a group.  Dressing up is strongly encouraged!

The dates for the escape room are June 24, 25, and 29. Call (231) 722-8014 to register for a time slot. Slots are filled first come first served. You may register up to eight people in your group. If a group is less than eight, librarians may schedule another group with yours.

On June 25th at 1:00 p.m. journey to a fantasy world in Girl Who Drank the Moon, an epic fantasy about a young girl raised by a witch, a swamp monster, and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon, who must unlock the powerful magic buried deep inside her. This book club is limited to 10 participants and is designed for kids 10 through 13 years old. Register at the Youth Services Desk and pick up a copy of the book. Snacks will be provided!
