Musical Performances, Michigan Notable Book Author, Summer Reading Program and Much More at HPL

Look at everything going on this month at Hackley Public Library!

This month, the Libraries Rock! Summer Reading Program for adults, teens and kids begins, Harbor Less: A Collection of Poems Informed by Great Lakes Shipwrecks features 2018 Michigan Notable Book author Cindy Hunter Morgan, music performances include Drummunity, autoharpist Adam Miller, and Grammy Award winning trumpeter Curtis Taylor, and we introduce two new groups: Book Buzz, and the "Left to Write" Creative Writing Group! It's June 2018 at your downtown library!

The Libraries Rock! Summer Reading Program begins June 12. You can sign up for an account on Wandoo Reader through our website to track all your summer reading or sign up in person at the library. Who knows? Maybe you’ll be able to drum up some good prizes!  

Muskegon adults and teens are also rocking summer reading this year. Read a library book (any format print or electronic) and put your name towards your choice of prizes. The more books you read the more chances you’ll have to win. Adults and teens will receive a free giveaway just for signing up. You’ll have to come in to get your giveaway, and Giveaways are limited on a first come first serve basis.

The Summer Reading Kick Off for Kids is Tuesday, June 12 at 4:00 p.m. and we’re kicking off our Summer Reading Program with a smash! Geologist Steve Tchozeski will provide a fun, family-friendly presentation on geodes and crystals. All participants will get the chance to crack open their own geode to take home!

We have activities for kids, teens and adults at HPL every month!

Tuesday, June 1, noon to 7:00 p.m., Tech Tuesday. Reserve your 30 minute appointment to have your computer/tech questions answered by our in-house IT people. We will answer questions on using computers and apps — anything from how to navigate Windows to how to upload pictures to Facebook. Call (231) 722-8012 at least 24 hours in advance to reserve your spot. By appointment only, walk-in spots will not be available.

Saturday, June 2, 10:30 to noon, Basic Computers. De'ondra Pentecost will teach computer classes on Saturdays from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm. Registration is required. To register, call HPL at (231) 722-8000 or visit our online calendar and look for the class you are interested in. Registration opens one month before the class. Classes are brought to you through t he generosity of the Friends of Hackley Public Library and the House Family Foundation.

Saturday, June 2, 2:00 p.m., Drummunity. Experience percussion like never before! All ages are welcome to participate in this hands-on, community-building, drum-beating, high energy activity led by Lori Fithian!

Monday, June 4, 6:00 p.m., Harbor Less: A Collection of Poems Informed by Great Lakes Shipwrecks. 2018 Michigan Notable Book author Cindy Hunter Morgan will be visiting HPL to give a reading of poems from her book. From Wayne State University Press: these poems are part history and part reinvention. The poems explore tragic wrecks in rivers and lakes, finding and forming artistic meaning from destruction and death.

Wednesday, June 6, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., NEW! Book Buzz. This isn’t your standard Book Club! Book Buzz is all about talking to other book lovers about your recently read and/or favorite books. This laid back atmosphere allows for great chatter and everyone is welcome. Coffee is included.

Tuesday, June 6, 6:00 p.m., A Bobby Kennedy Conversation. On the 50th anniversary of Robert F. Kennedy’s death, come to the library to see and discuss a collection of various items regarding Bobby Kennedy. Mary McDonald, the collection owner, will be available to give an overview of the collection items and answer questions.

Thursday, June 7, 10:30 a.m., Storytimes! Join us for stories, songs, movement activities, and a craft just for little ones.

Saturday, June 9, 2:00 p.m., Monthly Makers: Scratch Coding! Curious about computer coding but don’t know where to start?  Start with Scratch! We’ll lead you through a basic overview of Scratch, a programming language and online community developed by MIT. This program works best for students age 8 and up, and is open to the first 20 participants. Registration is required.

Monday, June 11, 6:00 p.m., Adam Miller. One of the premier autoharpists in the world, Adam Miller is a renowned American folk singer and natural-born storyteller. Miller accompanies his rich, resonant baritone voice with lively finger-picking acoustic guitar and stunningly beautiful autoharp melodies. A masterful entertainer who never fails to get his audience singing along, he has distinguished himself as one of the great interpreters of American folksongs and folktales, and as a performer who appeals to audiences of all ages.

Grammy Award winning trumpeter Curtis Taylor's lyrical and melodic improvisational style displays a level of maturity far beyond his counterparts. Founded in 1890, the Hackley Public Library is located at 316 W. Webster Ave, in downtown Muskegon. The library is open noon to 8:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Hackley Public Library will be closed on December 23, 24 and 25 plus December 31, 31 and January 1. We’ll be open usual hours December 26, 27, 28, and 29, and starting again on January 2.
