Teen Writing and Drawing Contest, Events at Hackley Public Library

The Off the Wall Annual Teen Writing and Drawing Contest is here at HPL!
Students in grades seven through 12 are invited to submit any original, creative work this month to our annual Off the Wall Annual Teen Writing and Drawing Contest. This includes poems, stories, drawings, and comics! Stop by the library for more information or check out our website here for details.
The contest runs from March 1 to March 31. All entries are due by 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 31.
We have activities for kids, teens and adults at HPL every month!
Thursdays, March 1, 8, and 29, 10:30 a.m., Storytimes! Join us for stories, songs, movement activities, and a craft just for little ones.
Mondays, March 5, 12, 19, and 26, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Girls Who Code. Hackley Public Library is excited to launch a coding club just for girls! We are an official host site for the international Girls Who Code organization. The club is open to students grade six and up. In the club, girls will master the basics of coding like loops, variables, functions, and conditionals to name a few. We will meet every Monday evening through the end of May. Wednesdays, March 7, 14, 21 and 28, 1:00 p.m., Tips and Tricks for Tablets and Phones. Having trouble with your tablet? Flustered by your phone? Bring it to HPL on Wednesdays at 1:00 to get tech help. Walk ins welcome.
Saturday, March 3, 10:30 to noon, Facebook. Get started with this popular social media site at this free workshop taught by De’ondra Pentecost. The class is limited to 10 so there is lots of personal attention. Registration is required so that there are enough computers for everybody. Call (231) 722-8000.

Monday, March 5, 6:00 p.m., Hackley Craft Club. Join the fun! Our craft club meets the first Monday of the month. Participants can request the crafts the will be offered in coming months. This month Nancy Hartman will teach Arm Knitting.
Uneven Ground performs at HPL March 6.
Monday, March 6, 6:00 p.m., Uneven Ground. This four-piece traditional Celtic band brings Irish, English and Scottish music. Local musicians Courtney Hutson, Dave Closz, Tim Staudacher and Larry Halverson will bring us on a unique musical journey.
Saturday, March 10, 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., Watercolor Painting. Children’s book illustrator Lori McElrath Eslick will teach kids the ins and outs of painting with watercolors. Come ready to paint with green and make a project for St. Patrick’s Day!
Saturday, March 17, 10:30 to noon, Basic Computers. Patient and popular instructor De’ondra Pentecost teaches this free introductory class for adult beginners. Learn what a mouse is, how to turn on a computer, and more. The class is limited to 10 so there is lots of personal attention. Saturday, March 17, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Monthly Makers: Dino Dig. Do you have what it takes to unearth dinosaur bones? We’re pulling on our paleontology hats and excavating dinosaur skeletons! All supplies will be provided. Registration is required. This program is open to the first 20 participants. Tuesday, March 20, noon to 7:00 p.m., Tech Tuesday. Reserve a 30 minute appointment to have your computer/tech questions answered by our in-house IT people. We’ll answer questions on using computers and apps -- anything from how to navigate Windows to how to upload pictures to Facebook. Call at least 24 hours in advance to reserve your spot.

Saturday, March 24, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., Legos! Did you know that the library has buckets and buckets of Legos? We do and we love to encourage engineers of all ages to build with our Legos so we can put them on display. The Legos are available from 2:00 to 5:00.
Saturday, March 31, 10:30 to noon, Excel. Want to get started with spreadsheets so you can work with numbers and statistics quickly and easily? De’ondra Pentecost will teach this introductory class for adults. Sign up is required for this small class. Call (231) 722-8000 to reserve a place.
Founded in 1890, the Hackley Public Library is located at 316 W. Webster Ave, in downtown Muskegon. The library is open noon to 8:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Hackley Public Library will be closed on December 23, 24 and 25 plus December 31, 31 and January 1. We’ll be open usual hours December 26, 27, 28, and 29, and starting again on January 2.
